Online Car Buying
If you decide to do some online car buying to find a car (or truck) you really like, what should you do before you complete the online sale? What if the car is not located in your state? You're going to need to do some extra leg work before you complete the sale but, it may be worth the extra work if the deal is right. First, make sure you check out a similar car locally - test drive a car like the one you want to buy online. You'll want to ensure that you like the way the vehicle drives and handles. How does the interior look and feel? Is it comforable and suitable to your tastes and needs? Is it suitable for your local weather conditions (ie: harsh winters, etc.)?
If the car you want to buy online is located in a state other than your own, you should contact the Department of Motor Vehicles and State Sales Tax Department in both the state you live in and the state you are making the purchase in. You may be required to supply additional paperwork for your registration and you may have to pay sales tax to both states. Dont assume that the dealer will to do this for you, they may not be as educated or concerned about state and local laws as you would think. The dealers only responsibility is to sell you a car, the interstate laws and taxes are your responsibility.
Finally, if you've gotten a great offer for buying car online but you are still a little leary, consider taking the offer to a local dealership that you feel comfortable with. Chances are real good that a local dealer will match or even beat your car buying online offer.
