The Wedding Garter Toss

Believe it or not, the wedding garter toss practice goes way back. In fourteenth century France, it was considered lucky to "win" a piece of the the bride's attire. People would rush towards the bride at the end of the ceremony in a mad dash to tear a piece of her "good luck" clothing for themselves. This often ended in a scuffle and many times, an injured bride or guest. Brides began throwing their garter in an attempt to salvage their wedding dress. Some even say, the groom would remove the bride's garter and then perform the garter toss as a symbol of the brides relinquished virginity. It was believed that the lucky man to catch the garter should to give it to his own beloved to guarantee her faithfulness to him.

However the tradition of the groom performing the garter toss actually began, today, the garter toss is still a hugely popular tradition. In our own modern wedding celebrations, the garter toss is an often expected tradition performed with it's own garter toss song. Today it is believed that the man to catch the lucky tossing garter will be the next to marry.
