Choosing Wedding Attendants
Choosing your wedding attendants will be one of the most difficult tasks you will encounter when planning your wedding day. You may not be able to choose everyone you want to be your personal bridal attendant. The size of your wedding and the style of the reception may dictate how many wedding attendants you should choose.
For a large formal wedding, as many as 10-12 bridesmaids plus your flower girl and personal honor attendant would be appropriate. For a smaller wedding you may want only 1-2 bridesmaids or no attendants at all. Traditionally a sibling serves as your personal honor attendant but you may also choose a best friend or even 2 personal honor attendants if you are unable to make a decision. Begin by asking your maid of honor (or matron of honor) first. She can help you plan a time or way to ask the other wedding attendants ... and if she is asked privately first, there is less chance of hurting someone else's feelings later. You should ask all of your bridal attendants in person or by letter. Be sure to ask them to be your wedding attendant far enough in advance so they can plan for expenses and any time off from work they may need in order to attend to maid of honor duties and bridesmaid duties. If there is someone you cannot include as your bridal attendant, you should let them know in person or by letter, as soon as possible. You don't want them to hear it through the grapevine!
When choosing your flower girl and ring bearer, speak to their parents first. Make sure their parents fully understand what you expect, some toddlers will not be able to make it all the way down the aisle. If you really want your 2 year old niece in the wedding, let her be herself and get as far as she can. She wil be an adorable flower girl and no one will mind that she didn't make it to the alter! Remember that your wedding and marriage will be full of compromises, choose your wedding attendants wisely!
