Wedding Unity Candle Etiquette
Why have a unity candle ceremony? When to light the wedding unity candle and, what is a unity candle meaning?

In recent years, most couples choose to have a wedding ceremony unity candle that starts out by having the taper candles lit in advance. Then after the couple has exchange wedding vows, the bride and groom each use a taper candle to light the wedding unity candle together. As far as the unity candle meaning, the joined flames in the unity candle ceremony represent the unity of marriage.

Another very popular unity candle ceremony version is to have the bride's mother and groom's mother each light a taper candle at some point in the begining of the wedding ceremony. Then after exchanging vows, the couple will light the wedding unity candle together. In this case, the unity candle meaning is that the joined flames symbolize the joining of their families.

A constant question is whether or not the taper candles should be extinguished immediately after the lighting of the wedding ceremony unity candle. You may wish to extiguish them as a sign of your commitment to one another. Or you may choose to leave them lit to emphasize your individuality within your union - either way you choose. Because, ultimately the style of your unity candle ceremony is completely up to you!

Many couple also choose to use a memorial candle during the candle lighting ceremony. The lighting of the memorial candle can be a wonderful and powerful way to remember and honor loved ones unable to attend your wedding ceremony but, who remain present in your hearts.
