Wedding Procession Order and Wedding Recessional

So what exactly does a wedding procession look like? The bride and groom make their way to the altar separately. This part of the wedding procession symbolizes the union of two different families and backgrounds. Traditionally, the father would then escort the bride down the aisle in this type of wedding procession. In today's society it is also acceptable for the bride to choose a different family member to escort her or to have both her mother and father escort her. She may even choose to walk down the aisle by herself, the choice is up to her!

What is the line up for a catholic wedding procession you might ask? A Catholic wedding procession begins with the officiant and groom waiting at the altar. The proper order of a catholic wedding procession is as follows ... the groomsmen will enter from the side or walk down the aisle being accompanied by a bridesmaid. The bridesmaid that will stand the farthest from the bride is the first bridesmaid to walk down the aisle. She is then followed by the other bridesmaids in succession. In this wedding ceremony procession style the ring bearer and flower girl will be next and will usually be seated with their parents after they reach the altar. The maid or matron of honor is the final person to walk down the aisle before the bride. The bride will make her entrance with her escort on her right.

A Jewish wedding procession begins with the Cantor or Rabbi entering first. Then the groom's grandparents, followed by the bride's grandparents. The groomsmen walk down the aisle in pairs with the best man, alone behind them. The groom will walk down the aisle with his father on his left and his mother on his right. The bridesmaid that will stand the farthest from the bride will be next, followed by the other bridesmaids in succession. The maid or matron of honor will follow. In a jewish wedding procession, the ring bearer and flower girl will then enter and are usually seated with their parents after reaching the altar. The bride will be escorted down the aisle with her father on her left side and her mother on her right side.

After reaching the altar the bride should be on the left with her back to the congregation for Catholic ceremonies. For Jewish ceremonies the bride is on the right and her parents stand under the Huppah on either side of the Rabbi.

Once the wedding ceremony is completed and you have become husband and wife, the wedding recessional begins. The Catholic wedding recessional order simply flows backwards from the procession, the bride and groom will be first followed by the flower girl and ring bearer (optional). Then the bridesmaids pair off with the groomsmen. The parents of the bride and groom then follow the wedding party out.

The Jewish recessional begins with the bride and groom, followed by the bride's parents. In this type of jewish wedding recessional order, the groom's parents follow next. The flower girl and ring bearer (optional), then the maid (or matron) of honor and best man. The bridesmaids and groomsmen pair off and will be followed down the aisle by the Rabbi.
